Before modifying a stream in any way contact the Department of Fish & Game. Contact your public works department if you are working in an area with flood problems. For new construction, contact your planning department to see if your community has setback (50 to 100 feet) or other requirements. If you are proposing to place any fill in a waterway contact the Army Corps of Engineers.

The Army Corps of Engineers issues permits for work done in waters under their jurisdiction.
Clean Water Act, Section 404 permit may be required.

Wardens and biologists can issue permits (Stream Alteration Permit, #1603) for streambank alterations. Biologists can also provide free practical advice on making effective repairs that reduce erosion and help wildlife.
Permit must be obtained before you take anything out of or put anything into a stream.

Issues water quality certifications (or waivers) for all permits issued by the Army Corps of Engineers, to ensure that Corps permits meet all state water quality standards (Clean Water Act, Section 401).
